Emeritus Professor Mark Okeke Chibuko Anikpo stands as one of Nigeria’s most respected sociologists—an academic whose life’s work spans scholarship, leadership, mentorship, and decades of intellectual contribution.
But long before the titles, honours, and accolades, his journey began with extraordinary trials that shaped both his character and calling.
Born in a time of national turbulence and personal hardship, Professor Anikpo’s early life was marked by events that would have ended many others.
From surviving the Nigerian Civil War as a young teenager to later overcoming a fatal gunshot wound to the chest, his path has been one of resilience forged under fire. These experiences laid the foundation for a life devoted to understanding society, leading with integrity, and serving humanity.
A Scholar, A Survivor, A Life of Purpose.
Professor Anikpo holds a First-Class Honours degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge, England. His academic journey includes being awarded a Fulbright Senior African Scholarship, a recognition reserved for scholars of exceptional promise and achievement.
Over the course of his career, he distinguished himself not only as a researcher and intellectual, but as a transformative leader within the academic community. In each capacity, he earned a reputation for discipline, fairness, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
His service includes roles such as:
- Head of Department
- ASUU Chair / Zonal Coordinator
- Dean of Social Sciences
- Deputy Vice-Chancellor
- Acting Vice-Chancellor
As a Fellow of the Social Science Academy of Nigeria (FSSAN), Professor Anikpo’s scholarship extends far beyond classrooms and conferences. His work has influenced institutions, shaped policy, and guided generations of students who continue to draw inspiration from his principles and dedication.
Yet, those who know him best often speak first of his humility, compassion, and deep sense of purpose—traits that anchor both his professional and personal life.
He is married to Dr. (Mrs.) Fanny Anikpo, and together they are blessed with four sons, four daughters-in-law, and several grandchildren who carry forward the legacy of perseverance and excellence.
